Organist and Director of Music

We are looking for a talented and experienced musician to creatively grow and develop the music at our magnificent church and support the recent growth in our worshipping community. St. John’s is an inclusive church where everyone is welcome and has a very active outreach programme.

- Exceptional three manual Lewis/Willis organ

- Weekly sung Eucharist

- All-age Sundays with a ‘lighter’ setting (approx. monthly)

- Robed adult choir

- Informal ‘Joyful Voices’ choir

- Civic services, Remembrance, Carol services etc.

Duties of the Organist and Director of Music

The successful candidate will, among other things:

Play the organ/piano to a high standard at services reflecting the character of each particular service, including anthem;

Lead a weekly robed choir practice on Friday evenings;

Develop the vocal abilities of our robed choir and along with the Vicar develop a recruiting campaign;

Work collaboratively with the Vicar to expand the range of music used in worship;

Support the ‘Joyful Voices’ choir to further enhance its contribution to worship at St John’s.

To ensure all musical activities for children, young people and adults are carried out in accordance with the church Safeguarding Policy. An enhanced DBS is required for this position.

Liaise with the Safeguarding Officer or Minister on any issues that may give cause for concern. 

Salary and Start Date

Negotiable based on RSCM rates, qualifications, and experience.

Additional fees for weddings and funerals.

Start date by agreement – available from February 2026
